COLOMBO

WELCOME TO LAKE LODGE

Location, Style and Luxury for Less

Taru Villas – Lake Lodge, Colombo, one of the city’s first accredited hotels, was transformed into a stunning city break haven in 2009. Keen to respect the rich heritage of a building which had been in her family for four decades, Nayantara ‘Taru’ Fonseka embarked on a project which would crystallize into the gold standard for ‘luxury-for-less’ hotels in Colombo, Sri Lanka. With her creative emphasis on lines, light, and space, Taru’s brainchild is the template for contemporary elegance and excellence.

It is testament to the tranquility of this accommodation in Colombo that you could easily forget just how close you are to all the amenities that any thriving city has to offer. With the capital’s restaurants, business district and other attractions only moments away, this exquisite hideaway proves that having the best of both worlds is certainly possible.

We also invite you to try one of our unique cocktails or healthy smoothies on the terrace at sunset. There are far tougher ways to end a busy day! THINGS TO DO

The city of Colombo and its surrounding areas offer an abundance of activity, history and culture. We will be happy to arrange any of the following and more, either prior to or after your arrival.

Tour of The Colombo Fort
Take a tour of this busy historical part of the city that is strong in architecture and is a photographers’ paradise. Begin at the Old Dutch Hospital, now a precinct of bars, restaurants and shops, that retains its original architectural structure. Walk around the Fort and the bustling Pettah markets, break for tea (or an arrack, for something stronger!), and stop to sample street food along the way.
Tour of the Galle Fort
Asia’s largest remaining fortress built by European occupiers, this gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site offers plenty by way of culture and history. Explore it all on foot, by bicycle, or in a tuk-tuk. You may also choose to extend your visit with a stay at either Taru Villas – Lighthouse Street or Taru Villas – Rampart Street.
Day Tour to Kandy and an Elephant Orphanage
Capital of the last Sinhalese Kingdom and home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, this hill country town sets itself apart in history and character. Stop en route at an elephant orphanage, sometimes housing over a hundred orphaned elephants at a time, and see them moving freely in their expansive surroundings. See baby elephants being bottle fed, watch the large herd make its way to the river, and look on as the elephants bathe in the waters.
Day Tour to Sigiriya and Dambulla
Start your day early and challenge yourself to climb over a 1000 steps to the top of the Sigiriya Rock upon which the ancient King Kasyapa built his palace. Hidden behind a formidable fortress of moats, walls, and ramparts are the palace water gardens, rock paintings or ‘frescoes’, and at its summit, a 360 degree panoramic view of the landscape. On your return to Colombo is the Dambulla Cave Temple, a centuries old sacred pilgrimage site made up of 5 temples within caves, embellished with murals and numerous statues.
Gangaramaya Temple and The Seema Malaka
Designed by the famous Geoffrey Bawa and exhibiting a happy marriage of cultures in its architectural design, the Seema Malaka Temple sits on the Beira Lake as an oasis of tranquility in the city of Colombo. A short walk away is the Gangaramaya Temple, known for its famous annual Navam Perahera (a colourful pageant of dancers, drummers and elephants). The temple is also notable for its unusually lavish decoration, and has a library and museum within its premises.

MAP & DIRECTIONS

From Sir James Pieris Mawatha turn on to Perahera Mawatha. Passing Bishop's College auditorium and the adjacent playground, Alwis Place is the first road on your left. Take the first left turn again at Alwis Terrace. Taru Villas - Lake Lodge is the last property at the end of this lane.
