LEELA WALAUWWA

INDURUWA

WELCOME TO LEELA WALAUWWA

luxury in an early 19th century colonial manor house

This early 19th century colonial manor house which belonged to a native headman was carefully restored by Taru and her young team.

Your private 4-bedroomed sanctuary, 1 km inland from Galle road, Induwara offers you a tranquil yet luxurious stay. A warm and friendly staff ensure that this truly is a memorable escape. Your personal chef will prepare delicious Sri Lankan or continental cuisine, tailoring to your requirements. You can even join him as he picks up the ingredients if you would like a visit to the local markets.

When the pool located in the garden, just off the living and dining area is just not enough and the beach calls, we take pleasure in getting you there and bringing you back. Complimentary transfers to one of our properties in Bentota (approx. ten-minute drive away) ensure you get the best of both worlds.

For a little alone time, relax in the gazebo in the upper garden with a book as you lounge on a day bed.

THINGS TO DO

Bentota and its surrounding areas offer an abundance of opportunity for activity, sightseeing, and culture. Our staff will be happy to arrange any of these and more, either prior to or after your arrival.

GALLE FORT TOUR
Asia’s largest remaining fortress built by European occupiers, this gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site offers plenty by way of culture and history. Explore it all on foot, by bicycle, or in a tuk-tuk. You may also choose to extend your visit with a stay at either Taru Villas – Lighthouse Street or Taru Villas – Rampart Street.
WATER SPORTS
Break away from tranquility to seek action and excitement on the Bentota River with a variety of water sports including jet skiing, water skiing, banana boat rides and scuba diving.
KANDHA VIHARAYA VISIT
Built in 1734, this temple on a hill is a popular place of worship for locals. Take a pilgrimage or simply visit to observe Theravada Buddhist rituals.
VISIT TO LUNUGANGA
Lunuganga was the influential architect Geoffrey Bawa’s own estate, where he experimented with his ideas about space, light and scale for nearly 50 years. When he bought the land in 1948 it was a rubber plantation on a peninsula jutting out into a lake. Over the years, Bawa painstakingly reshaped the land and the vegetation to fulfill his vision, in one case slicing off the top of a hill to improve his view of the lake! No flowers planted in neat borders, this is essentially a series of outdoor rooms with cleverly framed vistas – a Buddhist stupa on a hilltop, an artfully placed Grecian statue. Bawa continued to change and experiment with the spaces and structures throughout his life until his final illness in 1998. On his death in 2003 the garden was left to the Lunuganga Trust and is now open to the public.
THE TURTLE HATCHERY
Visit the turtle hatchery run by Sri Lanka’s pioneering sea turtle conservation project. Learn about this important operation and help to release the day’s hatchlings into the ocean.
BERUWALA FISHING HARBOUR
Visit one of the main fishery harbours on the West Coast of Sri Lanka and watch fisherman offloading the morning’s catch from their colourful canoes.
YALA SAFARI
Get close to nature with a day trip to Sri Lanka’s best loved National Park and discover exotic wildlife such as leopards, elephants, and bears. You may extend your visit with a safari stay at Taru Villas – Yala, our 2-bedroom private villa oasis.
"BRIEF GARDEN" TOUR
Travel inland for a feast of the senses at Bevis (the “other”, less-celebrated Bawa brother) Bawa’s wild and elaborate pleasure garden. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of nature in this sprawling and exotic landscaped garden.
