An Enchanting, Tropical Escape

This villa in Bentota, Sri Lanka is the perfect private getaway, a gift of paradise to share with your family and friends. Its winning combination of intimate ambience, soothing pace, and honest, unpretentious service conspire to offer up an experience that is, in design, service, and soul, unequivocally Sri Lankan.

Undoubtedly one of the most renowned beach villas in Sri Lanka, ‘Taru Villas – Rock Villa’ is an enchanting 170 year-old Walauwa (Heritage House) in a dream beach setting. It is situated on a beautiful, un-crowded stretch of coastline, tranquil enough to attract nesting turtles and a vibrant and audible birdlife – a rarity along the highly populated Southern and Western coasts of Sri Lanka. Spread out over 2.5 acres of manicured beachfront property, Rock Villa’s exotic and private garden brings you closer to the heart and soul of this tropical idyll; every luxury at your fingertips and every sunset at your doorstep.

The reassuringly spacious design, as you might expect from one of Taru’s most celebrated villas, is a feast for the senses and the soul. Pair this with the deep satisfaction of a passionately prepared dining experience and your holiday has begun…As the sweet smelling frangipani mixes with the salty sea breeze, siesta on one of many nap-inducing armchairs, sunbeds or hammocks or be waited on by the warm smiling team. Take a refreshing dip on a hot day, in a turquoise pool that reaches seductively towards the lapping waves of the ocean. Maybe you will find your ‘sweet-spot’ in the vast garden punctuated by pockets of cool shade from the palm trees above. Just a few further steps, over the single-track railway line and through the shady greenbelt of mangroves that lead you to the beach, you will discover the magic of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline.

Bentota and its surrounding areas offer an abundance of opportunity for activity, sightseeing, and culture. Our staff will be happy to arrange any of these and more, either prior to or after your arrival.

Asia’s largest remaining fortress built by European occupiers, this gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site offers plenty by way of culture and history. Explore it all on foot, by bicycle, or in a tuk-tuk. You may also choose to extend your visit with a stay at either Taru Villas – Lighthouse Street or Taru Villas – Rampart Street.
Break away from tranquility to seek action and excitement on the Bentota River with a variety of water sports including jet skiing, water skiing, banana boat rides and scuba diving.
Built in 1734, this temple on a hill is a popular place of worship for locals. Take a pilgrimage or simply visit to observe Theravada Buddhist rituals.
Lunuganga was the influential architect Geoffrey Bawa’s own estate, where he experimented with his ideas about space, light and scale for nearly 50 years. When he bought the land in 1948 it was a rubber plantation on a peninsula jutting out into a lake. Over the years, Bawa painstakingly reshaped the land and the vegetation to fulfill his vision, in one case slicing off the top of a hill to improve his view of the lake! No flowers planted in neat borders, this is essentially a series of outdoor rooms with cleverly framed vistas – a Buddhist stupa on a hilltop, an artfully placed Grecian statue. Bawa continued to change and experiment with the spaces and structures throughout his life until his final illness in 1998. On his death in 2003 the garden was left to the Lunuganga Trust and is now open to the public.
Visit the turtle hatchery run by Sri Lanka’s pioneering sea turtle conservation project. Learn about this important operation and help to release the day’s hatchlings into the ocean.
Visit one of the main fishery harbours on the West Coast of Sri Lanka and watch fisherman offloading the morning’s catch from their colourful canoes.
Get close to nature with a day trip to Sri Lanka’s best loved National Park and discover exotic wildlife such as leopards, elephants, and bears. You may extend your visit with a safari stay at Taru Villas – Yala, our 2-bedroom private villa oasis.
Travel inland for a feast of the senses at Bevis (the “other”, less-celebrated Bawa brother) Bawa’s wild and elaborate pleasure garden. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of nature in this sprawling and exotic landscaped garden.

Head south along the Galle Road (A2) from Colombo. Pass through Aluthgama town and over the Aluthgama/ Bentota bridge. Rock Villa is located on Nileesgewatte Road, which is approximately 900 metres after the 62nd Kilometre post, and is clearly signposted on your right. Once on Nileesgewatte Road, pass a Buddhist temple, immediately after which is a narrow lane to the left alongside the temple wall. Rock Villa is at the end of this lane.
