Surfing in Hikkaduwa
What makes Hikkaduwa a perfect destination for a surf trip is the perfect variety of waves to choose from. You don’t have to be a pro to be able to surf many of the waves Sri Lanka has to offer. In fact, there are waves suited to all different levels of surfing depending on which surf point of the southern coast in Sri Lanka you travel to and when.
Generally speaking the best time to surf in Hikkaduwa is between December and April. Outside of these months the waves can get choppy and rough. We advise getting up early to catch the waves at sunrise, before the sun gets too hot and the wind veers towards the shore.
After an energetic morning catching waves, retire to Taru Villas – 906, a bijou two bedroom beachfront private villa.

The best time to surf in Weligama is between September and May. However, even in the off-season you should still be able to find a spot to surf. As the sun can get quite strong we recommend surfing either first thing in the morning, or wait until early evening to catch a magical Sri Lankan sunset.
Surfing in Unawatuna
Unawatuna Bay produces some waves to the right that are known for being quite short. This surf spot is a five-minute drive from Taru Villas – Rampart Street in the heart of Galle Fort. It’s an easy ride working best on solid swells.
Generally speaking the best time to surf in Unawatuna is December, when the waves are a little bigger and the crowds smaller. Between January and March, waves tend to be swollen though the beach is more vibrant with a nightlife scene.

Surfing in Hiriketiya
It’s no secret: Hiriketiya is the newest entrant to Sri Lanka’s best surfing spots. The vibrant mushroom-shaped bay promises pretty mellow waves for beginners, but also has a decent left hand point break for the more advanced surfers. Take some time to check out Hiriketiya when you stay at Taru Villas – Mawella in Tangalle. With the beautifully Mawella Bay right in front, it is the ideal location to soak in the sun and enjoy the warm tropical seas after a busy day of surfing and sightseeing.
December to March are the best time to surf with dominant swells from the west. This cuts the power of the waves making it a nice spot for beginners. If you are a seasoned surfer, you may prefer to visit between August and November when the waves are fast and high.
The stormy off-season months between April and August does not necessarily mean an end to surfing, though the waves will be choppy and you won’t be able to surf if you are new to surfing.
