Sithulpawwa

Sithulpawwa is an ancient Buddhist monastery which is situated within Yala National Park. The temple, which is believed to have been constructed in the 2nd BC, is placed on a rocky outcrop that is surrounded by shrub jungle. The temple contains a large number of stupas, cave temples, Buddha statues, a stupa house and an image. Although the temple is the result of commissions given by various Kings throughout the years, it was initially created by King Kavantissa, the father of the fabled King Dutugamunu. Visit this ancient temple to learn more about its sacred features!

After your safari in Yala National Park, we can include this as part of your tour too. Let our team at Taru Villas know if you’re interested!

A Look into Sithulpawwa

  • One of the most fascinating aspects of Sithulpawwa are its cave paintings. The paintings are on the plastered cave walls and are similar to those of the Anuradhapura era.
  • Sithulpawwa is also known as the location where thousands of Arhaths- one who has achieved nirvana- lived at one time.
  • You can visit the temple, after your safari excursion.
